Churchill Families,
Happy October!! We have just finished our first month of school, and things are going great. We had our welcome back assembly last week, which was filled with tons of energy, and school spirit, plus we got to Knight our freshmen into the Lancer Family. This week we continued the school spirit with a Club Fair on Tuesday at lunch out in the sun. Students from our Clubs and Affinity Groups set up tables in the courtyard for students to check-out, ask questions of club/group members, meet their advisors, and join the different clubs if they wanted to. It was another great day to be a Lancer!

Next week we have a four day school week, with a testing day on Wednesday, and a day off on Friday for students due to our State In-service day for teachers. Monday will be an A Day, Tuesday will be a B Day, Wednesday will be our testing “C Day” early release at 12:30 pm (see more information below), and Thursday will be an A day.

Have a great weekend!

Go, Lancers!

FRESHMEN AND SOPHOMORES
October 9th will be a half-day of school with a condensed schedule of all 8 periods, providing students with an opportunity to connect with their teachers and catch up on schoolwork.

JUNIORS AND SENIORS
All Juniors and Seniors must update the Bluebook App on their student laptops. Instructions are in the attached quicksheets.

If you will not be taking the PSAT or SAT, you will follow a regular school day with a condensed 8-period schedule. This will give you the opportunity to check in with teachers, catch up on schoolwork, and get any additional help you may need.

To help you be prepared for testing, here are a few reminders:
  1. Get a good night's rest: Rest well the night before the test.
  2. Eat a healthy breakfast: A nutritious breakfast will help you stay focused throughout the exam.
  3. Arrive early: Testing begins at 8:30 AM, and we recommend arriving at least 15 minutes early to ensure a smooth check-in process.
  4. Bring necessary items: Students should bring the following on test day:
  5. An approved photo ID
  6. Their school-issued laptop (fully charged)
  7. Snacks and water (for breaks)

Please leave electronic devices, including cell phones and smartwatches, at home or turned off during the test.

Attendance Policy Flyer
Attendance Policy Update
Churchill Families,

As we develop systems to address areas of academic concern, especially cell phones and attendance, we are constantly evaluating what is working, what is equitable, and what needs adjustment. After discussing what best serves students and honors instructional time, we have made the shift to making ISS for chronic tardiness a half day on Wednesdays, with possible before and after lunch options, versus a full day. The rest of the policy stays the same.

We will always make efforts to reach out to families, discuss support, and utilize ISS as an option for the most extreme situations, where students would benefit from a concentrated focus on school work to catch up with what they have missed.

We appreciate your understanding and support in addressing academic needs.
College and Career News
Science Fair - Earn a scholarship and an opportunity to go to the national competition.

The new school year is off and running and STEM CORE is hoping the CWOSE Science Expo is in mind for your students.  Awards for outstanding projects include $9,000 annual, 4-year renewable scholarships to UO. The Central Western Oregon Science Expo is on February 15, 2025, at the University of Oregon.  This science expo (fair) is for interested middle and high school students.  Now is the time for students to begin research for the fair. Students need to run their projects by their science teacher before they get going to verify safety and to ensure they are ethically sound. This past year STEM CORE awarded THREE 4-year college scholarships at UO!  Projects were incredibly varied and inspiring. If students need help identifying a mentor, please reach out to the Director of STEMCORE at the University of Oregon, Dr Bryan Rebar at brebar@uoregon.edu.  He has loads of ideas about connecting up-and-coming students with near-peer mentors at the University of Oregon. Information on regulations and expectations can be found at: https://nwse.org/cwose/. The information listed is from this past year, but it is a great jumping-off point, so students have a clear idea of what to expect.

Become a Churchill Community Responder
A Churchill Community Responder is a volunteer that responds to “alerts” sent by the 15th Night Coordinator for needs specific to CHS students that have not been met by internal school resources. Types of alerts would be for items such as clothing, shoes, small household items, food or bedding, small gift cards, etc.

A Churchill Community Responder would receive a text message indicating a need. If the Responder can provide the need, they respond to the text message and work with the CHS Coordinator to secure and deliver the item. If you are unable to help with that alert you simply ignore the alert.
