Happy Spring Break!!!  I hope you all have a restful, rejuvenating, fun spring break!  This week off always seem to arrive just in the knick of time, but also means that the last part of the school year is near and it will be June before we know it.   During this week off our school and main office will be closed, but you can always send us an email or leave a message that we will return when staff come back to work on Monday, April 1st.

This past Weds. we had our first Class of 2024 Sr. Class meeting.  We will have another one towards the end of April, beginning of May to review information, check-in, and give final graduation and end of year details.  For more up-to-date information and all things Class of 2024, please make sure you are reading your school emails, checking out the Class of 2024 Graduation link, as well as staying current on our “Graduation at a G’Lance”.  Here you will find all the links and information you need about graduation.  Please also check in with your student’s counselor or Jill Reents, in the main office, for additional graduation information.

I hope you all enjoy your week off, and are able to step away from school for a while to recharge, breath, and get ready for the last quarter of the school year.

Parking at Churchill

Partial Parking Lot Closure

Construction work is still reducing the number of available parking spots in the Churchill lots. This disruption is taking longer than we originally expected, we apologize for the delay. Students are encouraged to carpool, take the LTD bus, ride bikes, or find other transportation options while we are short on parking spaces.

Off-campus parking: 

Please be respectful of our neighboring businesses. Parking lots at nearby businesses and apartment complexes are not available for student parking during the school day. Businesses will tow cars that do not belong to their customers. 

Remember that there is some limited parking available on the street on 18th Avenue.

On-campus parking:

Parking Permits

Parking permits are required in Churchill lots during the school day, except in designated visitor spaces. Students and staff should not park in visitor spaces. Students must complete a parking contract to purchase a parking permit. Financial assistance is available for permits.

Parking is only permitted in designated parking spaces. Lack of available parking spaces is not an excuse to park in a no-parking zone, loading zone, or handicapped parking space. Vehicles will be ticketed for parking inappropriately.

Color-Coded Hall Passes and Free-Period Stickers

Churchill High School uses hall passes and free-period stickers to help our campus supervision staff quickly identify students out of class without permission.

Free-period stickers on a student ID card are a quick way for staff to confirm that a student doesn’t have class during a particular period. Students are required to carry their student ID card with them while at school and present it to a staff member when asked. Free period stickers are available from counselors or Robin in the counseling center.

Color-coded hall passes help staff identify students who have left the general area of their classroom while on a permitted break. Here are some friendly reminders and information about hall passes.

• Students are only allowed to be out of classrooms during class time with a hall pass. 
• Teachers are in charge of how hall passes are used in their classrooms
• If a student abuses the privilege of a hall pass, the teacher may limit or take away hall pass usage for that student.
• Hall pass breaks should be 5 minutes or less. If you need more time than that, please alert your teacher ahead of time.

Color-Coded Hall Passes:

• Hall passes are color-coded to different areas of the school.
• On bathroom breaks, students are expected to use the bathroom nearest their classroom, inside their color-coded area. The nearest gender-neutral restroom may be outside of your color-coded area. It’s OK to use the color-coded passes to go to the gender-neutral restroom nearest your classroom.
• Colored reminder signs will be posted on all the bathrooms to help everyone adjust.
• Students who need to leave their classroom area for a reason other than using the restroom will be given a green hall pass.
• Campus monitors and administrators will be checking hall passes during class time to ensure students are in the appropriate area of the campus.
• Disciplinary action may be taken for students who leave their classroom area without permission.

Senior Class Meeting during Advisory on March 20

Seniors will receive information about upcoming opportunities, deadlines, and requirements for graduation. This is an important Advisory meeting for seniors.

Become a Churchill Community Responder

A Churchill Community Responder is a volunteer that responds to “alerts” sent by the 15th Night Coordinator for needs specific to CHS students that have not been met by internal school resources. These types of alerts would be for items such as clothing, shoes, small household items, food, or bedding.

A Churchill Community Responder would receive a text message indicating a need. If the Responder can provide the need, they respond to the text message and work with the CHS Coordinator to secure and deliver the item to Churchill High School.

Career and College News

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is OPEN NOW

The FAFSA and ORSAA are applications for financial aid. You will either fill out the FAFSA or ORSAA, not both. If the student has a social security number, they fill out the FAFSA. If they don’t, they fill out the ORSAA. If you aren’t sure which to fill out, use the filter tool, HERE. Many colleges and scholarships use the FAFSA or ORSAA data to award their funds too. So even if you think you won’t be eligible for grant money, and you are going to college, fill out the FAFSA or ORSAA!

The US Department of Education has overhauled the FAFSA to an extent we haven’t seen in a decade. It has been a bit of a rough launch, but the Federal Student Aid Center and many community organizations are working hard behind the scenes to resolve problems and provide support.
