Happy sunny weekend and happy solar eclipse on Monday!  (Granted, we will only see a partial eclipse, but it’s still pretty amazing!).

We are heading into Mid-terms this next week and will not have school on Friday due to it being a grading day for staff.  Please check your student’s grades on ParentVue, and encourage your students to finish assignments, re-take test, and check-in with their teachers about each of their classes.  We are down to the last 10 weeks of school, so it will go fast!!

I also wanted to share that this past week we started our new and updated Hall Pass expectations.  We were seeing too many students in the hallways for extended periods of time, and for some, multiple times throughout the period as well.  The teachers and Administration decided we needed a refresh on our expectations, and have a way to remind students that being in class is where they need to be.  Missing too much instruction leads to missed learning and deteriorating grades.  You can read the updated expectation below.

W.I.S.E. Lunchtime Speaker Series

Students in Churchill’s Women in Science and Engineering Club have worked hard to bring in some exciting guest speakers throughout April. See the schedule below.

Hall Pass Zones

• New Hall Passes in all classrooms are color-coded.
• The color of the Hall Pass indicates which bathroom you are allowed to use during class time.
• Teachers will be receiving a laminated copy of the color-coded zone map to display with their new hall passes.
• There will be colored reminder signs posted on all the bathrooms to help us all get used to the new system
• Campus monitors and admin will begin checking that students with hall passes during class time are in the correct zone of the campus.

What to Expect from Teachers

• Students will not be out of class for more than 5 minutes.
• Hall passes are to be worn visibly.
• Only 1 – 2 students are out of class at a time.
• Last 10 minutes of class, students are to stay in class.
• Green passes will be given to students going somewhere other than the bathroom or water.

**The privilege to use the restroom during class may be revoked if students cannot follow these expectations, and or the teacher determines breaks from class are being abused

Consequences

• Meeting with teacher and student.
• Calls and emails home from teachers.
• Lunch detention.
• Meeting with an administrator and the student.
• Meeting with an administrator, the student, and the family.
• Attendance contract.
• Potentially losing bathroom privilege during class time, excluding emergencies.

*We want students in classes to learn, and when you are gone for extended amounts of time you are missing valuable information and instruction.

Become a Churchill Community Responder

A Churchill Community Responder is a volunteer that responds to “alerts” sent by the 15th Night Coordinator for needs specific to CHS students that have not been met by internal school resources. These types of alerts would be for items such as clothing, shoes, small household items, food, or bedding.

A Churchill Community Responder would receive a text message indicating a need. If the Responder can provide the need, they respond to the text message and work with the CHS Coordinator to secure and deliver the item to Churchill High School.

Career and College News

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is OPEN NOW

The FAFSA and ORSAA are applications for financial aid. You will either fill out the FAFSA or ORSAA, not both. If the student has a social security number, they fill out the FAFSA. If they don’t, they fill out the ORSAA. If you aren’t sure which to fill out, use the filter tool, HERE. Many colleges and scholarships use the FAFSA or ORSAA data to award their funds too. So even if you think you won’t be eligible for grant money, and you are going to college, fill out the FAFSA or ORSAA!

The US Department of Education has overhauled the FAFSA to an extent we haven’t seen in a decade. It has been a bit of a rough launch, but the Federal Student Aid Center and many community organizations are working hard behind the scenes to resolve problems and provide support. See below for many useful resources.

The State of Oregon updated the ORSAA as well.

We are excited to offer drop-in services at Spark at Booth-Kelly in Springfield!

What are “drop-in services?”

This is a time and space for you to receive support from our staff and volunteers in a variety of areas. You can use our space to study, enjoy free snacks, and access shower and laundry facilities.

New Teen Programs at Your YMCA! Take a Look at Our Spring 2024 Offerings!

The Eugene Family YMCA is once again operating our CIT (counselor in training) program. It will be open this summer to 10th-12th graders. CITs can volunteer and participate in our many summer camps alongside YMCA staff who will foster their leadership skills and encourage them to take part in our community. This is a great program for any youth interested in working with kids, teaching, outdoor school, or as a camp counselor someday. It involves lots of interaction with campers, sunny days outside, and so much fun!

The link to our application is here — due by April 30th and requires a guardian’s signature and at least 1 reference. Selected applicants will attend an interview and staff training.
